When the Rain Pours

Today was the day before my birthday. It was a quiet Saturday, with two calls and a photoshoot lined up for the day. As to how cute pictures fit between those calls, I had no idea. Little did I know, someone else did.

It was 10AM and we had just finished brunch, my sister and I bumming on our beds on a lazy, gloomy Saturday morning. She asked what my schedule was like and encouraged me to prepare for my photos while the weather was overcast. Thunder had been rumbling in the distance, so we figured it would be a while. I just didn’t think my preps would take as long too. I kept praying that He’d stop the rain from pouring and He did.

After an hour and a half, I was finally done with my hair and makeup, but the weather went from about to pour to frying an egg heat level. Fast forward, our little photoshoot got bumped to 2PM.

When we were just about done, thunder began rumbling again. This time not too far in the distance. That’s a wrap I guess, we said. I told God, “You can let it rain now.” He didn’t.

10 minutes later, I get a video call from one of my closest friends who surprised me saying to go outside. It was scorching as we caught up, but who cares? It was better than getting drenched. We sought shade instead. I then said, “Okay, God. You can let it rain now.” He didn’t.

Just about an hour into my 3:30PM group call, I get a video message of my dog from my best friend… and she’s with my dog. In short, she was outside with the rest of her family to surprise me and spend a bit of time together.

The weather was quaint and cool, enough for a walk. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around my village and catching up, the first time that long in person in over a year. I thought, “Thank You, God, for not making it rain. But You can let it now.” He didn’t.

At a little past 10PM, my dad told us that there was an orange moon shining out. The night was so clear and just as he said, a full moon with an orange glow was present — seen by the naked eye. Oh, if it rained, the skies would probably have been covered with clouds.

30 minutes left to my birthday, the rain finally pours. The natural sound of raindrops splashing to the rooftop as those in podcasts to put you to sleep. Ah, what a beautiful way to end the day.

With a few minutes to my birthday to spare, I find peace in knowing that when you ask God for rain, there’s a reason why He doesn’t give it. Sometimes it’s to let people come, for experiences to take their course, and for perspective to be formed in hindsight.

As I enter this quarter life, I take on life through those lenses. That you will go through unbearable heat, but when God allows rain, He lets it pour — you need only to wait.
